Families

"The Cornells, though believed to be French Huguenots, joined the Dutch Reformed movement and came to this country with the Dutch in the early 1600's. Several children of Gilliam Cornell settled here in the township in the areas of Churchville and Holland. The families had many children, with the names of Gilliam and Adrian found in succeeding generations, and they intermarried with most of the other pioneer families. It is often said, "Don't talk about anyone-he is probably the cousin of the one you are talking to."

" It was the James C. Cornell farm on Holland Road, where the present Windmill Village now stands, that was the subject of a painting done in 1848 by the noted primitive artist, Edward Hicks. The painting features the prize winning cattle that won the premium in the Agricultural Society at Newtown, October 12, 1848. When James Cornell died, the painting was valued for inventory purposes at $20. It now hangs in the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C."

"An exhibit of Hick's paintings in various museums in Philadelphia and Bucks County, beginning in the fall of 1999, brought to light the 1846 painting of James C. Cornell's blue ribbon winner, "Prize Bull.""
