Random Notes

"The noted primitive painter, Edward Hicks (1780-1849), began his painting career as a 13 year old bound apprentice in Langhorne, building and painting coaches. (His father and grandfather, wealthy Tories in the service of the Crown, suffered great financial losses during the American Revolution.) When 20 years old, Hicks opened a coach shop in Newtown. "When a 'mechanical genius' of nearby Northampton, Dr. Joseph Fenton, came along with a tempting offer, Edward closed his shop and availed himself of the chance to acquire some practical knowledge while helping the doctor building a 'new-fashioned carriage.'" He stayed with Dr. Fenton for about one year, painting his house and doing odd jobs, but received only $10 for his efforts. (The property of Dr. Fenton is now the Bucks County Park and Recreation Board's riding stables on Holland Road.)
