"For several years the goal of the Northampton Township Women's Club was to have a library in the township. In 1968, club members met with township supervisors, and with their support and that of many volunteers, the goal was achieved. On October 3, 1970, a library opened in a small building on the old Nike base on Newtown Road (now the recreational center). It began with more than 3000 new and used donated books, including fiction and non-fiction, as well as children's books. Ameila Lawton became the first head librarian, with dedicated volunteers to help her. On opening day there were many applicants waiting to sign up for library cards. The library was a huge success! In just four years, it became necessary to enlarge the library: volunteers painted walls, installed recessed lighting, and put up and stocked the new shelves. The library became a member of the Bucks County Public Library System, entitling it to book exchange with the Bucks County Free Library whose headquarters were in Doylestown, Pa." For
