"As early as 1903, The Bell Telephone Company was pushing its lines into the rural districts, and farmers were realizing the advantages of being in close communication with the outside world. Representatives were in Montgomery County and in the Doylestown area trying to extend service and telephone lines; just let them put in telephones and keep them in repair for $3.60 a year. The customer had to pay for a pole to be erected near his home and for the line that would extend from the trunk line to his home. It took about ten more years to extend its service into Northampton Township in Bucks County."
