"Horse Thieves Societies"

"Believe it or not, there are still in existence today "Societies for the Detection and Recovery of Horse Thieves and other Villains." The Warren Company is one of the oldest, 1824. It began with 33 members from six adjoining townships, including Northampton, to recover stolen horses and other property throughout Bucks County "for want of more certain and reliable dependence then authority." Committees were appointed in each section of the township. If anyone on one of the committees reported a theft of a horse or mule to three other committee members, they would advise all society members. Map routes had already been set up, so each member knew where he should go: to Philadelphia to advise the police, to bridges, highways, horse stables, etc. No one should go more than 100 miles. If the stolen animal was not found , as was often the case, the member could be reimbursed no more then $100 from the society"
