"Self protection and preservation of property were uppermost in the early settler's mind. The Indians, and later the French, were a threat to his safety. Philadelphia was first to organize military companies, with the other counties soon following suit (1748) with associated companies called Associators. These companies were not recognized by provincial authorities except in the commissioning of officers; their men were subject to discipline by their own officers only."

"In 1776, Gilliam Cornell was appointed to distribute an allowance to the distressed families whose men-folk were now in actually service. Guns of Non-Associators were to be collected, but paid for - those who refused to give up their weapons would have a visit from the the newly formed militia. Our township formed the 4th Associated Company of the 1st Battalion, Bucks County Militia. This battalion was made up of townships located in lower Bucks County. It was called up to fight, among other times, with Washington at the battle of Trenton. It fought raids of the British out of Philadelphia and raids made by Loyalist forces, and maintained observation posts at Bristol, Pennsylvania, and Billingsport, New Jersey."

"After Washington's victory at Trenton, Hessian prisoners were brought to Newtown. They were greatly alarmed by a report that the American soldiers killed and ate their prisoners. Before the panic became serious, a German was found in Northampton who talked to them and calmed their fears"
