"$1 Million Comes to Township"

An article by Shaila Dani

Thursday May 12, 2005.

A total of $1 million in state funds for Northampton's new senior center and library expansion project was presented at Wednesday's supervisors meeting.
State Rep. Scott Petri, R-178, said lobbying for the money took about two years. He said he applied separately for each project because he wasn't sure which would get funded.
"Lightning sometimes strikes twice," he said of the two checks for $500,000 each. The two projects were competing with thousands of others from all over the state for community improvement funds, he said.
"We appreciate your efforts - and we appreciate your money," said supervisor Jim Kinney.
The new 10,000-square-foot senior center opened in September and cost $2 million. The $5 million library expansion project will double the size of the current building to about 30,000 square feet. Previously, the two groups shared the current library building. The library project should be finished in late spring 2006.
Earlier in the evening, Martin Frappolli, president of the Philadelphia branch of the CPCU Society, an insurance industry organization, presented a $500 check to goodwill project Brad's Sandalmania.
Northampton resident Brad Raudenbush, who is currently serving with the marines in Iraq, organized the sandal collection project and is distributing the footwear to Iraqi kids.
The project began in February and will end Friday, said supervisor Pete Palestina. So far, 700 pairs of sandals and $1,500 have been collected. Raudenbush recently gave out sandals at an Iraqi orphanage, said Palestina.

Petri represents Northampton, Wrightstown, and Ivyland and portions of Upper Makefield, Upper Southampton and Warwick.
